Immersive Experiences at the USS Midway

Growing up in San Diego, I visited the Midway Museum multiple times throughout my life whether it was a school field trip, with my Girl Scout troop, or volunteering at an event. Every time, I have had a wonderful and unforgettable experience unlike any before. The USS Midway is a unique opportunity to go back in time, and have an immersive experience in what it was like to live and work on an aircraft carrier. It’s spectacular views of the San Diego Harbor are just a bonus. I have fond memories of exploring the ship with my dad on father’s day and getting to sit in the Captain’s chair. I remember walking through all the little hallways, going up and down flights of stairs, and even getting to be up close and personal with some of the aircraft that would have been on the ship. Maybe all these little elements are what make it special. The article, Welcome to the Experience Economy, talks about the Four Realms of an Experience: entertainment, esthetic, escapist, and educational. I believe the USS Midway, hits the “sweet spot” in the middle of the Four Realms that the article discusses. The experience sits between absorption and immersion, active and passive participation.

Recently, I have volunteered at a couple different events that have taken place on the USS Midway. In my freshman year of college, I got the chance to volunteer at the Battle on the Midway college basketball game. They literally built a basketball court on the flight deck of the ship, which blew my mind. Another event that I volunteered at was Girl Scout San Diego’s Operation Thin Mint Cookie Send-Off. The last few years, this event has occurred on the flight deck as well, and the top cookie sellers actually get to arrive on the deck of the Midway by helicopter. The events team at the USS Midway consistently thinks outside the box to wow people and create an amazing experience.
