The Journey Continues

For three months, my Hospitality Leadership and Self Development class has been studying different leadership theories and ideas. This blog was designed as a way for us to individually reflect on the topics and assignments from class. We covered a lot of topics, from Great Man Theory to Situational Leadership Theory as well as the novel Good to Great by Jim Collins. Looking back on the semester and this blog site, I realize just how much I have learned and how much my thoughts on leadership have developed.

One of my main takeaways from this class was that I discovered how strongly I believe that leadership is something that can be learned; that you don’t have to be born a leader despite what Great Man Theory says. That is exactly why I named this blog Nature by Nurture. We must constantly push ourselves to be better leaders through study and practice and I think eventually some leadership behaviors can become second nature.

The main leadership theory that stuck out to me was Situational Leadership Theory. To me, the best leader is someone who is adaptable to different people and situations. No situation is ever exactly the same, just like no leader is ever exactly the same so one of the most important skills a leader could have is adaptability.

As the semester comes to an end, so does my leadership blog. I have learned a lot this semester about leadership and the type of leader I want to be. I am excited to continue to learn and practice leadership theory throughout my career.
